Halloween Home Safety Tips For a Safe, Spooky Evening

Halloween is a holiday that can be both scary and fun at the same time. With all the traffic your house will likely be getting on that supernatural night of sweets and scares, you should take a few minutes and make sure you’re taking the proper precautions to avoid a homeowners insurance claim. Halloween home safety is important if you’re hosting a party or if you’ll be hosting trick-or-treaters.

Before opening your home to the community you should first have an extensive homeowners insurance policy. Go online and compare homeowners insurance quotes to find the best policy at the most attractive price.

Here are some tips on practicing Halloween home safety so you can have yourself a spook-filled night of fun and enjoyment.

o Keep your property well-lit and unobstructed – Besides the fact that this is a welcoming gesture to all trick-or-treaters in the area, keeping your property well-lit and free of objects also avoids any chance of a liability suit if somebody injures themselves walking up to your front door.
o Practice fire safety – This is synonymous with Halloween home safety. Candles go hand-in-hand with jack-o-lanterns and other decorations and could be dangerous if not placed correctly and monitored. Don’t turn your ghost and goul-filled night into a fire department-filled night.
o Keep pets away from the action – Everyone thinks their pet is harmless but the fact of the matter is any pet surrounded by strangers could strike at any moment. Keep your pet secluded from visitors in order to prevent a potential liability suit.
o Lock up – At the end of the night when you’re ready to pack it in, make sure your home is locked and secure. Halloween is high-time for vandals and burglars to test their luck and try to damage and/or raid your home. Don’t become a victim.

Practice Halloween Home Safety And You Won’t Be Sorry

It only takes a little time and effort to practice Halloween home safety and allow yourself a stress-free good time. Talk to your homeowners insurance agent about more ways you can save yourself from having to file a claim on the creepiest and most fun day of the year.

5 Must Read Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is a time for fun, but don’t forget about the dangers that may be lurking for your family and your home. The break from the ordinary means that plenty of opportunities are there for criminals looking to catch you unsuspecting. Here are a few tips to keep you and your family safe this Halloween:

Inspect costumes and accessories carefully.

Look for flame-retardant costumes that don’t restrict your children’s movement, hitting them at the ankles rather than dragging on the ground. The chosen costume should be warm enough for a chilly autumn night, and bright or light in color to make your children easier to see in the dark. Though kids look for costumes according to their own criteria, you as an adult cannot let safety slide. Glow sticks or necklaces are fun accessories that also add a safety element. Shoes should be easy to walk in to keep your kids comfortable all night and avoid restricting their movement. Consider face paint instead of a mask that would restrict your child’s vision or hearing.

Always stay with your kids.

An adult must always accompany younger children, even if they stay within a relatively safe neighborhood. Kids and adults should stay together as a group; even on Halloween, letting young children wander around alone after dark simply is not safe. Older kids may be allowed to go out in a group without an adult, though remember to remind them about staying on sidewalks rather than in the road, obeying traffic signals, and never entering anyone’s home or vehicle, even with the promise of candy. Agree on a route and curfew before they leave.

If you consider your children responsible enough to go out trick-or-treating without you, equip them with a small pepper spray canister, a personal alarm, a cell phone, and a flashlight so that they can deal with anything that comes their way, from an attacking pet dog to a strange neighbor.

Guard your home.

Halloween is a unique opportunity for burglars and other criminals because people outdoors at night do not arouse as much suspicion on this holiday. When you leave to trick-or-treat, lock all of your doors and windows, and leave a light on. Make sure that your trusted neighbors know you will be gone so that they can keep an eye on anyone strange prowling around your place in the dark.

Inspect the treats.

Upon children’s return from trick-or-treating, inspect their treats. Though there is some media hype about the dangers of Halloween candy, the truth is, doctored candy is possible. Look for unwrapped pieces, or pieces that may have been re-wrapped. Discard any candies that don’t look safe.

With the excitement surrounding the Halloween holiday, it is easy to forget basic safety rules. To keep your family safe while trick-or-treating, dress properly, bring pepper spray and other protection devices, make sure your home is protected, and never eat the candies you get without inspecting them.

Halloween Costumes – Safety Concerns For Young Children

When purchasing or making Halloween costumes for young children, it is important to be observant of possible safety concerns, to ensure a happy and safe Halloween.

When choosing an Infant Halloween Costume for your young child or baby, comfort and safety are top of the list!

If a baby or toddler is not comfortable, they will not be able to enjoy the Halloween experience and are more likely to be upset.

Safety considerations are important in making a choice of costume, and the safety considerations are even more important when the costume is for a young child or baby. Some important things to be wary of are:

* Be sure the costume is free from small pieces that could get detached and might therefore create the potential of a choking hazard for a little ones.
* Also, for similar reasons, avoid costumes with cords or tassels which might pose a hazardous risk of strangulation.
* Check labels for flame retardant material. Some materials can be extremely flammable! During Halloween there can be bare flame from candles which could have the potential of ignition.
* By choosing a fabric that is soft and comfortable, the young child is more likely to be feeling comfortable and the occasion is therefore more likely to be a happy day for all!
* The weather and climate for your area should also be considered. For a warmer climate, it is best not to overdress an infant in a furry costume. And of course, baby should not be under-dressed and cold either.
* Changing diapers could be a bit complex with some costumes. It is best to select a costume that will give easy access to facilitate diaper changes.
* If travel by car is part of your Halloween experience, it will be necessary to secure baby for car travel. Will the baby be able to be properly secured in the car for traveling when they are wearing the costume, or will they need costume adjustments or clothing changes?
* Consider the size of the costume and the fit. Is it snug, or loose? A loose fit may result in baby sliding down within the costume. A tight fit may cause discomfort.
* For all children, but particularly so, if the young one is just starting to toddle, or still unsure on their feet, then be attentive that the costume is not impeding their movement and may possibly cause falls.
* Halloween, like other festivities, can be a tiring time for young children, so it is wise to ensure that they have been able to be well rested before Halloween Celebrations.
* Toddlers and young children can be frightened by Halloween events so, if they are at a talking age, talk to them before about dressing up and pretending, and also have an alternate plan in case the occasion is just too much for them. If they become distressed with the event, there should be a safe haven for them. If you have other children in the family that may be wanting to continue with their Halloween, perhaps you can have an alternative back-up such as the Grandparents to mind the baby or toddler if they are becoming too overwhelmed with everything, or if they are just getting too tired.

Happy Halloween!
